We find that more and more businesses are being threatened by their competitors resorting to this type of unscrupulous activity in order to gain the upper hand. What most people do not realise is that it is not the phone itself that contains the listening device but that the illegal device can be placed anywhere on the telephone line. This means that the listening device could be located anywhere between the phone extension and the telephone exchange. Furthermore the devices used to tap telephones and offices are extremely sophisticated and can be well concealed and disguised so that an ordinary physical inspection would not reveal their presence. In order to conduct a thorough search to locate and retrieve such devices requires:
(a) The correct "state of the art" equipment The devices employed to tap telephones are being constantly improved and more and more design emphasis is being placed on trying to make these devices" undetectable". For this reason it is necessary to ensure that the correct equipment is used by the team that is employed to detect these devices. You should be weary of the "fly by night" operators who purport to perform a thorough check of your premises using outdated or completely ineffective equipment. It is obviously difficult for the average man to distinguish between good and bad equipment or outdated equipment. To help you avoid being fooled in this regard we suggest that you establish the following: (i) The frequency spectrum covered by the equipment being used. (ii) Whether or not a non linear junction detector is being used. (iii) The make and model of the equipment. (iv) Whether you will be supplied with a computer generated frequency spectrum analysis. (v) Whether you will be supplied with a complete report following the exercise.
(b) The correct training
It is vital that the persons who conduct the search are properly trained in this field. This can be established through simple requests to provide certification of training on the equipment being used.
